Materials checklist
Room design — this matters more than you think
- Chairs in a shallow arc, not rows. Rows create an audience. Arcs create a cohort.
- No stage if you can avoid it. Same floor level. Walk the room during Day One, stand still during the Final Charge.
- Phones in a basket by the door for the two writing exercises only. Announce it as “fifteen minutes of your life, unrecorded.”
- Warm lighting, not fluorescent. Dim by 30% for both du'ā' moments.
- Water on every seat. Snacks after, never during — food kills silence.
- Two mic runners for the volunteer shares. Dead air during a share kills the vulnerability instantly.
The follow-up sequence — the seminar is the spark, this is the fuel
Rule: every email contains exactly one question and one ask. Never a newsletter. If they don't reply, the accountability partner gets a nudge instead.
How you'll know it worked
- % of attendees who wrote a named accountability partner with a phone number — target 80%.
- % who reply to the day-30 email — target 40%. This is your real retention number.
- Number of attendees who start something (a halaqah, a study circle, a service project) within 90 days — target 5%. This is your legacy metric.
- The qualitative one: how many people quote a specific line back to you unprompted three months later.
Precision
Every word earns its place or it gets cut. If you can say it in ten words, do not use twenty. Power comes from linguistic economy — say exactly what you mean and mean exactly what you say. Write the Final Charge out word for word and memorise it. Improvised endings are always weaker.
Depth
Do not be afraid to go academic for ninety seconds. Your students are smarter than you think and they are starving to be treated that way. When you break down an Arabic root or give historical context, you are not showing off — you are respecting their intelligence. Then come back to the ground. Depth without landing is just performance.
Emotional courage
If a verse moves you, let it show. Manufactured emotion is repulsive; genuine emotion is magnetic. Do not perform grief — feel it, and they will feel it with you. And be willing to be the first vulnerable person in the room. Share your own trust inventory item before you ask for volunteers.
Structure & vision
Know exactly where you are going every minute. And always leave people with a picture of what their life could look like if they took this seriously. Don't just teach Islam — make them dream bigger within their Islam. Spirituality and strategy are not opposites. They are inseparable.
The one arc rule
These are not two lectures. They are two acts of one story. Day One must leave people feeling weight — never guilt. Guilt paralyses; weight mobilises. You feel weight and you stand up straighter. Day Two must leave them feeling equipped, clear-eyed and genuinely excited to carry it. Heaviness without agency creates burdened people. Heaviness followed by tools creates warriors. Never, ever end Day One's emotion on Day Two's schedule.
